Hey Felix, Geoff and Kirsten. Thanks for the responses!
Yes you're right - 'makerspace' is probably inaccurate as a label for our
project. The reason we still talk about it as a 'makerspace' is because we
plan on building a community of people around our facilities, who are all
passionate about building their product. Their motivation goes beyond just
the love of making things, and extends to commercialising their products as
the foundation of a new business. Based on what you (and your friends in
the emails below) are saying, I understand that this is where DaSH Make
will differ from your makerspace.
*Re: Geoff Cohen* - Sorry Geoff I should have explained the project better
from a 'Why' POV. We (The Lake Mac Economic Development Company) hold NFP
status, and we're not doing this to turn a profit. We're doing this because
we know there's a lot of highly-skilled people (engineers, tradespeople,
problem solvers of other technical natures) in The Hunter who are (a) out
of work, or (b) have an idea for a product that they want to commercialise
and create their own new business in our region - thus developing the
economy. Yes, our facility runs on membership fees but that allows us
provide high-value, staffed facilities and programs designed to give our
'makers' (or Founders, if you like) the best shot at turning their product
into something big.
I acknowledge that your makerspace and many others value community,
open-source and passion above commercialisation. If it's ok with you, I'd
still love to attend and observe the next meetup and see for myself what
you guys do?
