University of Newcastle

+ve: University accommodation is close.

+ve: venue has the capacity required.

+ve: Aarnet fibre is on campus

-ve: there isn't much close to the campus. LCA09 Ran shuttle busses

Great Hall

Max Capacity: 1440

-ve: no projector installed.

-/+ve: most seats are on level ground but the stage is elevated

V Building

Close to GP and CT plenty of rooms with desks and small lecture theatres

-ve: greater distance from other lecture theatres

Newcastle Town Hall

+ve: close to Darby street. and off campus accommodation

Could spread the conference over Town Hall (unsure of main hall capacity), Civic Theater (which holds ~1500 people) and University House.

-ve: May be closed for renovation from 2010-2012 period

-ve: Accommodation prices ($120+) are fine for speakers, but not for regular attendees

+/-ve: Aarnet network pulled from Newcastle University city campus

Barahineban

contains 95 rooms which can be single occupancy or shared (all self-catered) These air-conditioned units contain fully equipped kitchens, private bathroom, TV and video.

Edwards Hall

houses 374 residents (299 fully-catered, 75 self-catered places). There is a choice of corridor, unit or air-conditioned rooms with ensuites Edwards Hall Dining Room seats up to 380 and is adjacent to the terrace and swimming pool areas.

Evatt House

houses 212 residents (all self-catered). Guests are accommodated in single bedrooms with shared kitchen, dining/lounge area and bathroom facilities.

International House

houses 226 residents (semi-catered with 5 dinners/week). single accommodation for 221 guests in five and ten bedroom units and six bedroom townhouses with shared kitchen, dining/lounge area and bathroom facilities

Transport

Car

Newcastle is 200km North of Sydney. Take the F3

Parking is $3 per day, free parking for on campus residents.

Train

Sydney to Newcastle

Brisbane to Newcastle

Plane

Newcastle region airport has flights to all major Australian domestic airports.

-ve: Airport to Accommodation/University could be expensive

Bus

You can catch public buses from the Airport into Newcastle, but you would then have to change buses in Newcsatle to get out to the Uni.

Buses that run from the Uni to Newcastle (as of Feb 2008):

100, 101, 103, 104, 108, 225, 226 (Between them they run at least every 20mins - half hour)

AARNET usually sponsors the network bandwidth which would be fine through the University. May be a problem if we are located in the city centre.

Aside from the usual LCA sponsors, getting Newcastle based sponsors (outside of those in out LUG) may be more of an issue that most major cities.
